What is WAKE?WAKE (Worldwide AIS Network) is a decentralized maritime intelligence network that collects and validates AIS (Automatic Identification System) data from ships globally. It uses blockchain technology to ensure data is tamper-proof, reliable, and accessible.
-
Why is WAKE needed?Traditional AIS data is controlled by centralized platforms that often rely on unpaid volunteers, leaving data vulnerable to spoofing, manipulation, and geographic gaps. WAKE solves this by validating data through decentralized, trustless verification.
-
How does WAKE verify AIS data?WAKE uses multiple independent validation methods, including peer agreement, physics-based timing checks, motion modeling, and fraud scoring, to ensure the authenticity of submitted AIS data without trusting any single node.
-
Who can participate in the WAKE network?Anyone can participate! Whether you're an individual enthusiast, a vessel operator, or part of a community group, you can join the WAKE network by operating an AIS receiver node. You just need the right equipment and an internet connection, no special affiliation or permission is required.
-
What equipment is needed to run a WAKE node?To operate a WAKE node, you’ll need: A VHF AIS-capable receiver (like a software-defined radio (SDR) or dedicated AIS hardware) GPS-based timestamping, or a system clock synchronized with NTP servers Stable internet connectivity for submitting captured data Consistent uptime and accurate location reporting WAKE doesn’t mandate specific hardware brands, but your setup must meet these performance standards to qualify for rewards. Check out our guide here.
-
Can nodes participate from remote areas?Yes, WAKE encourages participation from remote and underserved regions! If you're the only node in your area, your data will be provisionally trusted and logged. As the network grows, earlier data from isolated nodes will be retroactively validated against new peer submissions. This way, early contributors in remote regions can still participate and earn rewards without being penalized for low local density
-
Do I need to be located on the coast to run a WAKE node? No, you don't have to be right on the coast, but being closer to shipping lanes or areas where vessels pass increases the quality and quantity of AIS signals you can capture. Nodes located near coastlines, rivers, ports, or busy waterways tend to earn more rewards because they collect more unique and valuable maritime data. However, WAKE also rewards coverage in underserved areas, so inland locations with occasional vessel activity can still contribute meaningfully.
-
Can I run a WAKE node on a ship or boat?Yes! Ships, boats, and even yachts are ideal platforms for WAKE nodes. As long as your vessel has a VHF AIS receiver, GPS time synchronization, and stable internet connectivity (for example, through Starlink or other satellite providers), you can run a fully operational WAKE node while at sea. Operating a node on a moving vessel helps capture AIS data across remote and underrepresented regions, making your contribution even more valuable to the network, and increasing your potential rewards
-
Can I deploy a WAKE node on oil rigs, barges, or buoys?Absolutely! WAKE nodes can be deployed on any platform with stable power, internet connectivity, and AIS reception, including oil rigs, barges, offshore platforms, and specially equipped buoys. These types of deployments are highly valuable because they provide coverage in remote or high-traffic maritime areas where traditional coastal stations can't reach. If you're operating from offshore locations, your contributions can dramatically boost network integrity, and earn premium rewards for unique data.
-
Can I run multiple WAKE nodes?Yes, you can run multiple WAKE nodes, as long as each node has its own AIS receiver, internet connection, and is registered to a unique wallet. Each piece of hardware is cryptographically locked to its wallet ID, creating a one-to-one link between the node and the wallet. You can't share hardware between wallets or register the same receiver twice. Running multiple independent nodes, across ships, shorelines, or buoys is encouraged and can increase your rewards if each contributes valuable, authentic data.
-
How are contributors rewarded?Contributors earn WAKE tokens for submitting validated AIS data. The more unique, fresh, and reliable the data especially from remote or underserved regions, the higher the rewards.
-
What is the WAKE token used for?WAKE tokens are used to reward contributors, to access validated AIS data, and to pay small network fees when submitting data. Every node must hold a small amount of WAKE to interact with the network’s smart contracts and stay active.
-
How many WAKE tokens are there?WAKE has a fixed supply of 500 million tokens, released gradually over 40 years through a controlled 2.5% annual emission rate. No new tokens will ever be minted beyond this cap.
-
How are token rewards calculated?Rewards are based on a contributor’s impact on the network, not just the volume of data submitted. Nodes earn more if they capture unique signals, operate in low-coverage areas, and consistently deliver accurate AIS data.
-
When do I receive my WAKE rewards?Rewards are time-locked for 10 days after submission. During this period, your data is validated for consistency and authenticity. If no fraud is detected, the full reward is released automatically to your wallet.
-
How does WAKE verify AIS data?WAKE uses multiple independent methods to verify data, including cross-checking with nearby nodes, analyzing signal timing, validating motion consistency, and detecting spoofing patterns. A message is only rejected if it fails at least two separate validation checks.
-
How does WAKE prevent fraud?Nodes that submit suspicious or inconsistent data are flagged with a fraud score. If fraud is detected over consecutive periods, the node’s pending rewards are slashed, and after repeated offenses, the node is permanently banned from the network.
-
Can I get penalized for submitting bad data?Yes. If your node repeatedly submits invalid or tampered data, your pending rewards can be confiscated (slashed). If fraud continues after slashing, your node will be banned and unable to earn future rewards.
-
What happens if I'm in a low-coverage area?Nodes operating in areas with little or no peer coverage are not penalized. WAKE provisionally trusts these nodes and retroactively verifies their data as more nodes come online. Honest early participants are fully rewarded even if peer density is low.
-
How can I get involved with WAKE?You can get involved by setting up a WAKE node and contributing AIS data to the network. Whether you’re a coastal station, a ship, a buoy, or an offshore platform, you can help expand coverage and earn rewards.
